Praise for She Had No Choice...
5 out of 5 STARS "I loved this book. It was interesting following the family through its history of woes and heartache. I found myself rooting for the women in this story, wanting them to get out of their situation, stand up for themselves and choose to walk away... The one thing that I found delightful was the ending. Perfectly appropriate!!"

OVERVIEW of She Had No Choice...
She Had No Choice is a dramatic family saga that takes a Latin spin on the epic novel and film, The Color Purple. Inspired by a true story, this gripping and poignant multi-generational story follows the Ramirez family through a roller coaster of difficult, yet inspiring events, setting off a wide range of emotions. This tale proves that Love really does conquer all.

Other 5 out of 5 star reviews...
Burroughs writes with such intensity and you feel what each character is going through on each and every page. She states the book is inspired by a series of true stories. I feel this enhances the reader's expectations. The story ends in 1960 and I am hoping for a sequel! Sophia and Eva have come a long way since 1918. I want to follow their lives and I have no doubt all readers who enjoy She Had No Choice will agree.

She Had No Choice a Tale of Love and Survival edition by Debra Burroughs Literature Fiction eBooks

This was my introduction to Debra's talent as a writer and I know I'll be coming back for more. She was able to take a story which spanned several decades and make it interesting. I got a good look at what a nomadic lifestyle was like and, if love did abide in a marriage and family, a hard life could feel rewarding. However, when wives and children live under a reign of terror - walking on eggshells and enduring mental and physical abuse of varying degrees - it's another story entirely.

I cried when reading parts of this book, wishing I could have been present to defend these defenseless women and children - and clobber abusive men on the side of the head. Such as it was, with me only reading a story, there wasn't much I could do except stew and brew as I continued to turn the pages. However, there is absolutely no way I would ever be able to watch something of this caliber on a television screen; I fear the scars of abuse would live on in my mind for years to come, making me a prisoner of my thoughts.

Times were certainly different back then; what seems unimaginable now was the norm for such a time period. There was no such thing as just moving away and starting over or getting a restraining order, especially when living amongst a minority. All too often, the "outsiders" don't want to get involved or, perhaps, like to pretend nothing amiss is happening so they can justify their consciences when they go to bed at night.

I enjoyed the way the story ended but, if honesty was to prevail, I'd have to admit that I'd like to read more about these characters and what happened next - as long as a man named Carlos was buried 6 feet under or went through an amazing transformation.

Keep the books coming because, if other writings are like this one, they would all be winners, in my opinion.

She Had No Choice a Tale of Love and Survival edition by Debra Burroughs Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

From start to finish this book kept you in suspense. Living in Arizona I learned a lot about the plight of migrant workers and their families. Anyone who has been in a domestic violence marriage should read this book. There is always hope, just believe in yourself.
"She Had No Choice" by Debra Burroughs presents the suffering, sacrifices and turmoil that span three generations of Latina women, starting with main characters Juanita Ramirez, her daughter, Sofia and finally Sofia's own daughter, Eva. Burroughs skillfully weaves relationships and heart-breaking dilemmas with numerous supporting characters, including spouses, siblings, families and friends without overshadowing the plight and strength of these three women.

While the story starts from 1918 and goes on until 1960, sadly, such problems still ring true for many people, including women in our modern-day world. In her novel, Burroughs deals with the powerful issues that leave her female characters with no clear-cut choices due to unfortunate circumstances resulting from societal beliefs during the time period, plus the women's innate sense of loyalty and familial duties. Her novel depicts the difficult decisions her main characters were forced to make, whether it entailed staying in abusive relationships for the sake of their progeny, or gathering the courage to stand up to their tormentors knowing there will be consequences. Burroughs concludes her characters' long-suffering fates with a celebration of their underlying strength, endurance and unwavering belief that a better tomorrow is indeed possible.

A credit to her excellent writing skills, coupled with perhaps, her closeness to the true-to-life people who inspired this novel, the pages echoed the female characters' pain, and I anguished over their situations. I found myself turning the e-pages, hoping for positive outcomes and was delighted with their victories, big and small.
Sophia & Eva indeed had strength & courage. Their will to survive& protect their children is commendable. The story is believable & may guide women in similar situations to find their own strength.
I would have liked to have a few characters expanded upon, or left out.
I love Debra Burroughs' novels. This is no exception. I hovered between a 4 star and 5 star rating. I had to go with 5, because of the time era. It was a hard world for women, and harder for Mexican farm workers. Whereas the reader may have ideas about how these people should never realistically suffer such abuses at their homes, churches, and schools....it was all too common in those years. I know, because I grew up in that era. I am a sap for exciting endings.
Let's get this out of the way. There are some serious editing and time line issues. The most glaring is the end of WWII is not 1944, rather 1945. Miss Burroughs needs to go back and make the corrections to ensure an excellent product.
Now let's move on. Gals, you should truly enjoy this gripping story. There is no fluff in it. This is the life of Mexican-Americans attempting to find a better life for their families. Some might think that parts of the abuse Sofia and her children endured at the hand of a jealous, abusive, hard drinking husband were overdone. I assure you, they were not. I saw most of the events the author described (except the hitting) first hand as I was in the contracting business for twenty-five years and spent a lot of time with the men and their families. Sophia makes the best out of her situation and hopes her own children won't be condemned to the same fate she chose.
Fate is a funny animal as her daughter Eva appears to be heading down the same path. She falls in love with the first man she ever dates and starts spiraling down the same path as her mother. All appears to be lost until an old friend of Eva's return from the past and is flung into the families dire straits. Will he be able to help the family distance themselves from the past, or will their sorrows and plight continue to compound?
This an excellent read and I highly recommend it for any woman or man who believes they have reached the end of their rope. Read this book and you might realize, no matter how dark the horizon appears, given a chance, the light will eventually show itself.
